First constructed in 1896, the Altenheim was originally operated as a senior citizens assisted living facility for German immigrants to the Bay Area. LIIF provided predevelopment and acquisition financing for the renovation of the complex into an affordable senior housing development. The improvements included the restoration and remodel of the existing buildings into 93 studios and one-bedroom units, as well as shared spaces consisting of a library, sitting room, prep kitchen and dining hall, and the construction of an additional 81 studios and two-bedroom units.
