CHILD CARE

Research continues to prove that a child's early education experience significantly affects his or her cognitive abilities later in life. Without quality child care, children are left at a severe disadvantage. As such, it is vitally important that children receive excellent care from their earliest days. LIIF has provided $51 million in loans, grants and technical assistance to child care providers, supporting nearly 52,000 child care spaces to-date.

EDUCATION

LIIF is committed to providing financing that will enable more students to be educated in quality educational facilities; one strategy for doing so has been our work to provide financing to charter schools located in low income communities. To date, LIIF’s education program has provided 117 loans totaling nearly $210 million; this activity created 46,000 quality classroom spaces for low income children.

HOUSING

LIIF was founded with an emphasis on affordable housing because housing costs consume a disproportionate amount of a low income family's budget. Over the years, LIIF has helped thousands of families by financing safe, secure and affordable housing alternatives. Nearly 80 percent of the 55,000 affordable housing units LIIF has financed since 1984 are occupied by very low income households.

PUBLIC POLICY
Sound public policy matters for low income neighborhoods. As such, LIIF partners with leading advocacy and community development organizations in an effort to strengthen public institutions and policies that increase the availability of housing, child care, education and other services benefiting low income communities. LIIF opened its Public Policy office in Washington, D.C. in July 2008.
