EDUCATION
THE ISSUE
A quality education is one of the primary building blocks to lift families out of poverty, and is a key component in enhancing opportunities for economic mobility and asset growth for low income households. For example, a high school graduate is likely to earn $270,000 more than a high school dropout over his or her lifetime, while over half of full-time workers with no high school diploma live below 200 percent of the poverty line. The poor performance of much of our children's educational system, particularly in low income communities, is leaving a generation of our youth at risk.
Charter schools offer a promising alternative to traditional public schools, particularly for the low income families LIIF serves. While charter schools are public schools, they do not receive a dedicated stream of capital funding and do not have access to municipal bonds or the ability to levy taxes--the typical methods for financing public school facilities. As such, these schools can benefit from LIIF’s expertise in real estate financing and technical assistance.
PROGRAM STRATEGY
Since 1999, LIIF has provided nearly $210 million in capital to 117 schools, supporting 46,000 classroom spaces. LIIF’s education program aims to help schools create stable, sustainable learning environments by providing educational organizations with flexible and affordable financing. In this way, LIIF supports schools that provide families and communities with additional options for a quality education, and addresses the critical need of preparing youth for the workforce and raising educational achievement.

POLICY
LIIF has established an Advisory Group of leading California policy makers, as well as developers, operators, technical assistance providers and funders of charter schools. The Advisory Group, which LIIF convenes a minimum of three times per year, provides a forum for sharing challenges, best practices, and emerging issues and opportunities in public policy.EDUCATION PUBLICATIONS
