NEW YORK CHILD CARE SEED FUND PROJECTS

The New York Child Care Seed Fund (Seed Fund) provides planning grants and loans, as well as training and project consultation for child care center providers who wish to expand, preserve or enhance their child care facilities. Highlighted below are two Seed Fund projects:

LENDING
Keshet Learning Center in Brooklyn, New York

The Seed Fund provided a $116,000 loan to Keshet Learning Center to renovate a two-story building in the racially, ethnically and economically diverse Midwood section of Brooklyn, NY. Keshet is now providing full-and part-day care to 81, 2-5 year old children, an increase of 19 children with the new site. Keshet offers free Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) to 20 children and accepts vouchers to enable children to remain at the program for full day care.  In addition, Keshet applied to the New York State Education Department (SED) to offer 26 to 40 children integrated special education preschool, which will provide services valued at nearly $1.6 million for the families.

GRANT-MAKING
HeartShare Human Services of New York

The Seed Fund provided a $15,000 grant to HeartShare Human Services (HeartShare) of New York, a leading provider of early childhood education services to developmentally delayed and disabled children for almost 25 years. The grant allowed the center to conduct a feasibility study of the costs and services associated with the renovation and development of its center. This feasibility study includes program assessment, site development analysis, financial analysis and recommendations. HeartShare’s preschool programs serve more than 1,400 low income children and families in New York City each year. The renovation and development of the new HeartShare center will enable it to preserve and enhance 197 child care spaces for the families it serves.
