CALIFORNIA PRESCHOOL ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM (CPEEP)
Assisting center-based child care facilities, serving children birth to five years old
Program Overview
"This is to express the California Department of Education’s support of the goals of the California Preschool Energy Efficiency Program, a program designed to assist public and private preschool centers to achieve energy efficiency savings and educate children and families about energy efficiency."
- Jack O’Connell, California Superintendent of Public Instruction
"This is such a great opportunity for our organization to finally save money plus be more energy efficient. Thank you for contributing to our awareness of energy conservation and helping us do our part to be kind to the earth....We are very grateful for this CPEEP program. I am so happy that child care centers (probably the most needy) are able to take advantage of this opportunity." - Renee Solorzano, Quality Children's Services
The California Preschool Energy Efficiency Program (CPEEP) is a great opportunity for center-based child care and preschool facilities in the Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Pacific Gas & Electric service areas to upgrade their facilities and save money on energy bills. In addition, CPEEP has created simple downloadable educational materials that are appropriate for teaching basic energy efficiency skills and providing knowledge to preschool students and their families. You will find them in English and Spanish here.
CPEEP is a collaboration of five organizations: Low Income Investment Fund as the lead agency, California Child Care Resource and Referral Network, the California Department of Education, the California Head Start Association, and Intergy Corporation.
This $5.7 million program will replace older, energy-intensive equipment at eligible child care centers with energy–efficient upgrades that help reduce operating costs.
Eligible center-based child care facilities include Head Start, state-contracted and private centers served by: Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Pacific Gas & Electric.
As of June 2008, CPEEP has served 500 child care centers, which represents a combined annual savings of approximately 1.6 million dollars!
Funding for CPEEP is limited.*
*In case of a waiting list, priority will be given to: centers serving low income children and/or facilities more than 25 years old, centers with the most potential for energy saving, and/or larger centers serving 75 children or more. This is a short-term project of about 2 years with limited funds. Funds are available on first-come, first-served basis while funds last. This program may be modified or terminated without notice.
